So I gave up on reading Naked Lunch. Again, I got about 40 pages into the book and lost interest. I guess I need to read a more linear style of story telling.

I started to read "Cicero: The Life and Times of Rome's Greatest Politician" by Anthony Everitt. It's a great book so far. I'm also reading two other books; "A Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley and "The Tupamaro Guerrillas" by Maria Esther Gilio. I should be able to finish all three books by the end of the summer.

Happy 100th Birthday, Jimmy Stewart!!

Today would have been Jimmy Stewart's 100th birthday. To celebrate I'm watching "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance". I loved the part when he punched John Wayne! I'm glad I finally watched this movie. I mainly stayed away from watching it because I'm not a big fan of John Wayne. If I had known that Lee Marvin was in it, I would have watched it sooner (I can't get enough of watching movies with Lee!). I admit I was pretty ignorant about this movie.

Any how, TCM is showing a marathon of Jimmy's movies and I have to wait until tomorrow to watch "Harvey" - it's on way past my bedtime!

It's sad to hear that Charlton Heston died last night. I just watched "Planet of the Apes" on Friday night. I hadn't seen that movie since the '80's and I still enjoyed it, I wasn't sure how it would hold up. I also enjoyed him as Cardinal Richelieu in Richard Lester's "The Three Musketeers". He seemed a bit stiff at times but he was fantastic (and that voice!) There are two many roles to mention here but I think it's safe to say that he was a great actor. I hope people remember his acting and not the NRA shit or unfair interview by Michael Moore in "Bowling for Columbine" (by the way, it showed great journalistic integrity for that fat piece of shit to interview a man who was in the early stages of Alzheimers..but I digress).

The Magnificent Seven, indeed...

Last night I watched the movie, "The Magnificent Seven". Wow. It's been a long time since I really enjoyed a movie.

The movie is loosely based on Akira Kurosawa's Seven Samurai (another movie that can't be missed!). I really enjoyed the story and the characters are so much fun to watch. I also have to confess that I find Yul Brynner and Steve McQueen incredibly sexy (Robert Vaughn and James Coburn aren't bad either).

There are so many great one liners. I won't go into which ones are my favorite, it could spoil the plot and this is a movie you really have to see. It's too good to miss!

Book for April - Naked Lunch

I have many, many books. Shamefully, the percentage of books I have read versus what I own is at about 35%. So I have decided to pick a book I haven't read, read it completely, and then write about it.

You see, it's not that I don't read. But what I've been doing for the past couple of years is re-reading books that I love or only reading certain authors and not exploring my very bloated book collection. My favorite books are anything written by the following: Alexandre Dumas (pere), Rafael Sabatini, Charles Dickens, and J.K. Rowling. I have read the "Three Musketeers" about 5 or 6 times (and the entire series twice) and I'm at the point where no one wants to be around me when a movie adaption of this book is being played on television (yeah, I'm a total geek).

So my pick for this month (though I don't anticipate it taking that long to read it) is "Naked Lunch" by William S. Burroughs. I have read a few books from Burroughs (Junkie and Queer) as well as his letters to Allen Ginsberg. For some reason I couldn't get into "my reading groove" or build any momentum reading this book - I never got past the first 40 pages. So, here I go....delving into the depraved, addiction addled mind of William Lee and Interzone - something I haven't done in about 15 years.
